I regularly hear things like, “I want to be you when I grow up” and ”I would love to be as busy as you are”. Often I’m asked what my secret is. I’ve often said that I’m happy to tell, but quietly inside I typically wonder if the person asking is willing to do the work.
I’m going to let you in on a little secret here…. I would love to be thin. Really I would. Still, tonight I had a coke with dinner and thin mints for dessert. I watch TV and look at the skinny minis and think, “what would I give to look like that?”. Ah, that’s the real question though, right? Clearly I’m not willing to give up the soda, thin mints, pasta, ice cream, sugar in my coffee, etc. I’m not willing to get up and hit the gym every morning.
What on earth does this have to do with having a successful home staging business? Well, you see… the question that isn’t usually asked is, ‘What would I give to have a successful business?”, or if it is, it’s said basically in the same way I think about being thin – without any real intention, just a little bit of “what if”.
What it takes to have a successful home staging business is effort, delegation, constant marketing and managing your time and energy – much like being healthy and physically fit. (Now why I don’t have the gumption to do all of this to be thin, I haven’t figured out yet.) Most of the time I hear that people don’t have time, their market is different or some other excuse – the same ones that I say for not exercising and not making better food choices.
The truth is that it all comes down to what’s important to you. I haven’t made the decision to make the effort to be thin. If you aren’t successful in your home staging business, it is probably because you haven’t decided to make the decisions that are required to have a physically fit business.
It is not easy to make the right choices. It takes hard work. It takes committment. Important things are rarely easy. This is why so few do it.
